We’re thrilled to announce a revitalised update to the Men’s Singles Matchplay Championship format for 2026 at Ballina Golf & Sports Club.
In recent years, a growing number of scheduled matches have been forfeited, which has impacted the integrity of the competition and the process of crowning a true matchplay champion. To address this, we’ve introduced a dynamic new format that ensures every qualifier plays multiple matches and earns their place in the finals.
Key Format Changes:
- World Cup-style Qualification & Group Stage
Players will qualify through three Saturday rounds in January. The top 32 qualifiers will be seeded into 8 brackets of 4 players each, based on GA Handicap Index. Multiple attempts to qualify are permitted. - Group Stage (Round of 32)
Each player will play three matches in a round-robin format. Points are awarded for wins and halves, with the top player from each bracket advancing to the Quarter Finals. - Knockout Stage
From the Quarter Finals onward, the format returns to traditional knockout matchplay, culminating in a Final and 3rd Place Playoff. - Expanded Match Windows
We’ve significantly extended the timeframes for each stage to reduce forfeits and ensure matches are played. The Match Committee will step in only when players cannot agree on a date. - Prizes
- 1st Place: $250
- 2nd Place: $200
- 3rd Place: $150
- 4th Place: $100
This format ensures that each finalist will have played six matches across the season—making the path to the title both competitive and rewarding.
