Club Centenary Year: 1908-2008

 Update July 2008

Ballina Golf and Sports Club was abuzz over the weekend of the 4th 5th and 6th July with Members and Friends joining in the festivities to celebrate the Centenary of the Clubs Founding.

On Friday afternoon, 4th July 2008 a symbolic “Tee-Off” was held, with seven club members, each with 50+ years of membership teeing off together.  Friday night was our Raffles and Trivia Night with around 30 Trivia questions on the Ballina and Ballina Golf Club with great prizes given away.

On Saturday night 5th July, the Club hosted a three course gala dinner, attended by 200 Members and guests.  Many fond memories were shared and all agreed the food and entertainment were fantastic.  Saturday night was also the launch of Ballina Golf Club Centenary Book, which can be purchased from the Office or Bar for $25.  Also on sale is the Clubs Centenary Port, which is also $25 and can be purchased from the Club’s Bar.

The fun continued on Sunday 6th July with a Centenary Mixed Golf Day followed by fingerfood and Live Jazz “Heaton’s Heroes”.  The music proved to be so pupular the band was asked to play on for an extra hour.

Centenary memoribilia can still be puchased through our Pro Shop.

Club Centenary Year: 1908 - 2008

Ballina Golf Club celebrates its Centenary year in 2008. The inaugural meeting of the club was held on 6 June 1908, the first committee being elected on 12th June and the opening event held on 7 July 1908.

To celebrate the occasion a Centenary Committee was formed on 18th November, 2004 to organise a programme of special events - golf and social - to be held during this year but particularly in July.

Centenary memorabilia is being made and shirts, caps, towels and general golf equipment will be available in the Pro Shop.

A Centenary Booklet of the club’s history, special events, members (some notable and others not so notable) clubs within the club and hopefully a host of photographs, newspaper items and other topics of interest, is being compiled and should be available by the end of June. Until recently, this has occupied the bulk of the Committee’s time as records were difficult to locate and information had to be obtained from past members. The compilation of the Centenary Booklet is still in progress and any photos, newspaper clippings, items of interest etc. that you think suitable would be welcomed and given serious consideration for publication. Any such item could be left at the Club office or given directly to a member of the Committee.

It is hoped to publicise what is happening not only in the local media and at the club but also by using the club’s website on the internet - www.ballinagolfclub.com.au. Many members now use their computers for information so we hope this is a way to contact these members (current and past) and keep them abreast of events within the club. They could also pass on this information to some of our members who may not be computer literate.

It is hoped to update the website to advise members of what’s happening so please check regularly.

Submission to the Board of Directors

RE: PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR CENTENARY YEAR

The Board meeting held on 31 January 2009, approved the following proposals submitted by the Centenary Committee.

Golf Programme

To commence on Thursday 3rd July and run for five consecutive days concluding on Monday 7th July. This allows each section of the club (Viz Men Golfers, Lady Golfers, RSL Club Golfers and Veteran Golfers) to conduct their own day and competition. Sponsorship may be sought to boost the prize pool for these events.

Social Programme

An informal “cocktail” party with suitable music to be held on Friday 4th July 2008.

A more formal Dinner Dance with a Guest Speaker on Saturday 5th July 2008.

A Jazz Band to entertain after the Sunday Mixed event on 6th July. It is proposed to hold these functions within the Clubhouse.

Centenary Booklet

It is proposed to publish 300 copies of a 100 page book which outlines the history of the club since its inception in 1908. Sponsorship pages will be available to help keep the cost of the booklet at a very reasonable price. Sponsorship is available for businesses, family groups or individual members.

Memorabilia and Special Logo

It is proposed to have available for sale such items as Shirts, Hats, Towels, Golf Balls etc. inscribed with a special Centenary Logo.

Miscellaneous

Efforts are being made to contact Greg Norman and his associates. Greg was the winner of our first Pro-Am in 1976 and it was one of his first wins as a Pro golfer. It is hoped he may choose to contribute in some way no matter how small. Peter Senior is another high profile player who has won here as an amateur and as a Professional. Peter and his brother Jeff played regularly in the Summer Cup and between them won the title in 1976, 1977 and 1978. Peter also won the Pro Am title in 1987.
